Dangerous Goods Logistics Driver
As a Dangerous Goods Logistics Driver, you will support the safe and compliant movement of hazardous materials, production hardware, tooling, and other mission-critical cargo between Castelion facilities, vendors, test sites, and external partners.
You will execute local and regional material movements while maintaining strict safety, security, and regulatory standards. When not actively driving, you will support Shipping & Receiving and Materials operations, including shipment preparation, packaging, loading and unloading, material movement, and other logistics activities.
This role requires strong attention to detail, sound judgment, a high degree of ownership, and the ability to operate independently in a fast-paced, high-hazard production environment.
Responsibilities
- Safely transport hazardous materials, energetic materials, chemicals, rocket motor components, production hardware, tooling, and other mission-critical cargo between Castelion facilities, vendors, test sites, and external partners.
- Execute local and regional transportation routes based on production and operational requirements.
- Operate commercial vehicles and trailers in accordance with applicable DOT, FMCSA, state, and company requirements.
- Perform required pre-trip, en-route, and post-trip inspections of vehicles, equipment, and cargo.
- Ensure shipments are properly packaged, marked, labeled, placarded, secured, and documented in accordance with applicable DOT Hazardous Materials Regulations and company requirements.
- Review and verify shipping papers, manifests, Safety Data Sheets (SDS), emergency response information, permits, and other required transportation documentation.
- Load and unload vehicles using appropriate material-handling equipment and approved blocking, bracing, strapping, tie-down, and cargo securement methods.
- Operate forklifts, pallet jacks, and other material-handling equipment as needed.
- Comply with applicable hours-of-service requirements, vehicle weight limits, routing restrictions, cargo securement standards, and hazardous materials transportation requirements.
- Maintain accurate driver logs, shipment records, vehicle inspection documentation, and proof of delivery.
- Coordinate closely with Shipping & Receiving, Inventory, Engineering, Production, and other Operations teams to support time-sensitive material movements.
- Identify packaging, documentation, placarding, cargo securement, vehicle, or safety discrepancies and resolve or escalate issues before transportation.
- Follow applicable emergency response procedures in the event of a spill, vehicle incident, or transportation emergency.
- Maintain assigned vehicles, trailers, and equipment in a safe, clean, and serviceable condition.
- Support Shipping & Receiving and Materials operations when not actively performing transportation activities.
- Complete and maintain required DOT hazardous materials, security awareness, function-specific, driver safety, and company-specific training.
- Flex between scheduled transportation and urgent mission-driven logistics requirements as company priorities change
Basic Qualifications
- Valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL), appropriate for the class of commercial motor vehicle assigned.
- 5+ years of verifiable commercial driving, logistics, transportation, shipping and receiving, or material-handling experience.
- Clean Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) and ability to meet applicable DOT and company driver qualification requirements.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a valid DOT Medical Examiner's Certificate when required for assigned commercial driving responsibilities.
- Ability to comply with applicable DOT drug and alcohol testing requirements for safety-sensitive commercial driving positions.
- 5+ years of experience working with hazardous materials in a shipping, receiving, transportation, or material-handling environment.
- Working knowledge of DOT Hazardous Materials Regulations and applicable 49 CFR Parts 171–180.
- Ability to complete and maintain required DOT hazardous materials employee training, including general awareness, function-specific, safety, security awareness, and applicable driver training.
- Working knowledge of applicable Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (FMCSR), including driver qualification, vehicle inspection, hours-of-service, cargo securement, and hazardous materials transportation requirements.
- Experience preparing, inspecting, loading, securing, and transporting regulated or sensitive cargo.
- Ability to verify shipping papers, markings, labels, placards, emergency response information, and other required hazardous materials documentation.
- Ability to accurately maintain driver logs, inspection records, shipping documentation, and transportation records.
- Experience operating forklifts, pallet jacks, and other material-handling equipment.
- Ability to handle a physical workload, including lifting and moving materials up to 50–75 lbs.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to safety, particularly when working around hazardous or energetic materials.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and exercise sound judgment in the field.
- Clear communicator capable of coordinating across multiple teams in a fast-paced environment.
- Flexibility to work overtime, changing schedules, and occasional extended or regional routes as operational requirements dictate.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. government-issued security clearance. U.S. citizenship is required, as only U.S. citizens are eligible for a security clearance
Preferred Skills and Experience
- Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL-A) with Hazardous Materials (H) endorsement.
- Experience transporting Class 1 explosives, energetic materials, rocket motors, propellant, or ordnance.
- Experience transporting Division 1.1, 1.2, or 1.3 explosives.
- Experience with DOT-regulated hazardous materials transportation and strong familiarity with 49 CFR Parts 171–180.
- Experience packaging, marking, labeling, placarding, documenting, and securing hazardous materials shipments.
- Current Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC).
- Experience with hazardous waste transportation and applicable RCRA requirements.
- 10+ years of commercial driving, hazardous materials transportation, or logistics experience.
- Experience operating commercial vehicles and trailers in local and regional transportation environments.
- Experience with ERP, MES, or warehouse management systems.
- Experience working in aerospace, defense, military, advanced manufacturing, or other high-hazard environments.
- Active U.S. Government security clearance.
CDL and Hazardous Materials Requirements
- Employees may only operate commercial motor vehicles and transport hazardous materials for which they hold the legally required license, endorsement, medical qualification, and training.
- A CDL-A with Hazardous Materials (H) endorsement is preferred at the time of hire. If the employee does not possess an H endorsement at hire, they must obtain the appropriate endorsement before independently transporting any hazardous material for which an H endorsement is required.
- Drivers assigned to hazardous materials transportation must maintain all applicable DOT/FMCSA qualifications, medical certification, required training, endorsements, and records throughout employment.
